In October 2004 I took one of the most difficult decisions of my life.
After receiving the heartbreaking news that our 4th IVF cycle had failed, I told my husband that I couldn't face the prospect of another disappointment. I couldn't justify to myself the emotional stress of going through yet another IVF cycle, which our Doctors said had less than a 10% chance of success.
In effect, I was saying that I wanted us to give up on our dream of having a baby, and spend the rest of our lives knowing that we would never have a family.
Imagine my disbelief and elation when only 2 years later in September 2006, I got the phone call which I had been waiting for 6 long years to receive...
It was my Doctor, giving me the results of the blood test which confirmed that at long last
...I was PREGNANT!
During those 2 years my husband and I had learned about the astonishing success rates of having a baby with egg donation, which had forced me to re-consider my previous decision. We had spent many months researching the pros and cons of egg donation, choosing a clinic, deciding whether to have treatment at home or abroad, finding a suitable egg donor and making many other important decisions.
But once I had become pregnant, the real work had only just begun.
We discovered the crucial differences about having a baby using egg donation, which meant that WE were responsible for taking important steps to sustain the pregnancy for the first few months.
Now, we are preparing to share what we have learnt with other potential Mum's and Dad's who are also considering having a baby using egg donation!
